Stuck Below an IELTS or TOEFL Requirement?

“I’m stuck at a 6.0, but I need a 6.5 for admission.”

“Ok. How many times have you taken the test?”

“This was the fifth time and my last three scores were all 6.0. What should I do?”

This conversation was last week, but it is a discussion we have had many times at the ELP. You prepare for the test, you take the test over and over, you are so close to the required score, but you are stuck. It’s very frustrating. If you’re stuck on the IELTS or the TOEFL, here are some considerations to help you break free.

Banco Santander offers 500 scholarships to boost business English, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania

Banco Santander, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania, has launched 500 Santander Language Scholarships | English for Professional Development – University of Pennsylvania, to improve mastery of Professional English.

These scholarships are designed to help students and young professionals who are non-native speakers who want to pursue careers in a global market. 

Applications can be submitted at www.becas-santander.com until 16 December 2020.

Ian Nichols Selected by U.S. Department of State for Prestigious English Language Specialist Assignment

The U.S. Department of State announced the selection of Ian Nichols of the University of Pennsylvania English Language Programs for a six-week virtual English Language Specialist project focusing on media literacy in Serbia. Ian is part of a select group, as his project is one of 130 that the English Language Specialist Program supports each year.  

Penn English Language Programs Conducts Virtual Sample Classes

On Friday, July 24th and Thursday, July 30th, the English Language Programs (ELP) conducted demo English lessons for both current and prospective students. The first lesson, taught by ELP Language Specialists Rachel Gonzalez and Eve Nora Litt, went over common idioms in American English and how to develop the strategy of using context clues to guess the meaning of idioms. This lesson was geared towards current students with a high intermediate English proficiency level.

Ian Nichols delivers Media Literacy Webinar Series for America House Chisinau

On Thursday, July 30th, English Language Programs Advising Specialist Ian Nichols concluded a series of webinars for approximately 25 participants on media literacy for the America House in Chisinau, Moldova. This webinar series began on July 20th and consisted of both video lectures and independent assignments, completed on the America House Chisinau Facebook page. The topics used in this series were based on the ELP’s English for Media Literacy MOOC, which can be accessed here.
