by Elaney Tedder

On Thursday, July 30th, English Language Programs Advising Specialist Ian Nichols concluded a series of webinars for approximately 25 participants on media literacy for the America House in Chisinau, Moldova. This webinar series began on July 20th and consisted of both video lectures and independent assignments, completed on the America House Chisinau Facebook page. The topics used in this series were based on the ELP’s English for Media Literacy MOOC, which can be accessed here.

Nichols was invited to deliver this webinar series by Dr. Daniela Munca-Aftenev, president of the Academy for Innovation and Change through Education and manager of America House Chisinau. America House Chisinau is the cultural center for the U.S. Embassy in Moldova and, according to the U.S. Embassy in Moldova website, is a place “to meet friends, listen to interesting people, participate in workshops, learn a new public speaking skill, read books in English and borrow English-language movies.” Recently, in response to the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent social distancing guidelines, America Houses around the world, including America House Chisinau, have been using social media to continue providing engagement opportunities for those interested in American culture and developing their English language skills. These opportunities can be found with the hashtag #AmSpacesAtHome.

If you are interested in watching the recorded webinars and viewing the independent assignments for this series, please see the links below. Please note that these webinars are intended for those with a high intermediate English proficiency level.

We would like to thank America House Chisinau for inviting a member of our talented staff to lead this series on media literacy. The ELP looks forward to continuing to foster our relationship with the U.S. Department of State and its programs in the future!
