Penn English Language Programs Goes Online with Remote Courses

by Elaney Tedder

This summer, Penn’s English Language Programs, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, will be providing three new courses for international undergraduate students and professionals around the world to enroll in: English for Leadership and Innovation, English for Business Communication, and Instructor-Guided English for Career Development. English for Leadership and Innovation and English for Business Communication will be remote adaptations of our Summer programs.  While each course will have differing content and objectives, they will share the same goal: to engage learners through dynamic, live sessions with instructors and peers. During their time enrolled in the course, students will receive individualized feedback and support from their instructors and, upon completion of the course, a Penn certificate that states the number of equivalent coursework hours. These courses were developed by several ELP staff members, including Robyn Turner, Michael Sullivan, Sarah Grosik, Ula Cutten, and Elizabeth Gillstrom. More information about these new courses can be found below:

English for Leadership and Innovation (ELI)

This three-week course prepares students to communicate more clearly and confidently in a university environment through coursework in two content areas: Leadership and Innovation & Technology.

This course will be led by Robyn Turner, the Short Open-Enrollment Programs Manager for the ELP. She is also a designer and instructor in one of Coursera’s most popular online courses, English for Career Development.

English for Business Communication (EBC)

In this three-week course, students develop their communication skills for entrepreneurship as they complete the process of testing, refining, and selling a new product idea.

This course will be led by Michael Sullivan, a Language Specialist at the ELP. He has also helped design other online and hybrid courses, such as Penn’s Coursera MOOCs and a program for journalists in Kazakhstan.

Instructor-Guided English for Career Development (IGECD)

This five-week online course equips non-native English speakers to advance their careers in the global marketplace. Students enhance their language skills and vocabulary by completing real-world assignments that they can immediately put to use, for example, a professional resume and cover letter. The course is accessible to a wide range of proficiency profiles through leveled and supplementary content.

This course will be led by Sarah Grosik, the Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the ELP. She oversees the curriculum and instruction for all of the programs and courses at the ELP, and has been heavily involved in the creation of these new courses.

We are proud of the resilience and adaptability the staff and instructors at the ELP have shown during this time, and continue to show. The ELP looks forward to successfully implementing and running these new programs for the first time this summer!
