Carlo Cinaglia presents at PennTESOL-East Conference

ELP Lecturer Carlo Cinaglia gave a presentation entitled “Academic Discourse through an Ethnographic Lens: Students Exploring Language Practices on Campus,” at the PennTESOL-East Conference on November 5th at Arcadia University.

Presentation Abstract:

This presentation reports on one university’s attempt at redesigning its first-year course for L2 writers to promote overall academic literacy development.  Focusing on a series of reflective writing assignments that ask students to examine academic language practices they encounter, this presentation makes a case for encouraging students to be language analysts themselves, promoting reflective learning and language development.  The presenter will discuss sample reflective prompts and provide examples of student reflections as well as their perceptions of the assignment itself.  Participants will brainstorm applications of this assignment to other instructional contexts.  Of interest to L2 writing instructors and curriculum developers.
