Amanda Thompson

What Amanda Thompson does: She teaches in the ELP’s Intensive Program, as well as at the Wharton School of Business, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Weitzman School of Design.

Experience: A former journalist, Amanda has taught ESL for 14 years, the last 11 at Penn. Her specialty is teaching writing. She enjoys working in academic, cross-disciplinary contexts, including intermediate and advanced academic writing, English for engineering, research writing, personal narratives, and persuasive business writing. Outside of class, she tutors Wharton students and has mentored students and taught at Penn's Graduate School of Education. She also rates the speaking proficiency of international graduate students. Amanda presented at the Symposium on Second Language Writing in 2016, 2017, and 2019, and she was invited to present at the 2020 and 2023 conferences.
