What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test is an online language certification that takes about 30 minutes to complete. The first portion of the test will contain a series of speaking, reading, writing, and listening exercises. At the end of the test, there will be an interview portion that will ask you to respond to each question in 30 to 90 seconds.


Why do I have to take this test?

We use this test as our placement exam. All students entering the Intensive Program at the ELP must take this test before they arrive. The test score helps us to place students in the level that is best for them.


What do I need to take the test?

You may complete the test on any computer that has an internet connection, speakers, a microphone, and a front-facing camera.


How much does the test cost?

The test is free to you. Do NOT enter payment information. Instead, click “Coupon Code” and enter the code we sent you.


How long does it take?

It should take about 25-30 minutes.


Will I know my score?

At this time, Penn ELP doesn’t share final test results with candidates. You will learn your level placement when we contact you to complete a course interest and availability form.


I had technical problems and wasn't able to complete the test. Now what do I do?

Why is my score not certified and what do I do about it?

It takes Duolingo a few days to process your test. Check back later to see if it has changed from “Pending” to “Certified.” If it is still not certified, look for an email from Duolingo with an explanation. If you do not see one, reach out to them directly by emailing “
